Crossovers Information
Crossovers is an opportunity for skaters in Basic 4-Freestyle 3 to have extra instruction and practice time besides Basic Skills group lessons. This year we will be incorporating extra elements into our Crossovers Program including Dance, Synchronized Skating, Pairs Skating, and Artistry in Motion as "Specialty Classes". These are all additional opportunities with United States Figure Skating to learn other disciplines within the sport. These additional disciplines do require a higher level of skating so the majority of the instruction in these areas will be for Freestyle levels. However, Basic 4-8 skaters will receive some Specialty Class instruction that will be adapted to the lower levels so they can share in the experiences. Here is the breakdown of a 60 minute Crossovers Session.
Explanations of Specialty Class Disciplines
Dance- Dance is a discipline in which a skater performs a set of steps on a particular pattern to music of a certain tempo. When a skater tests an ice dance, they must demonstrate it with a partner.
See an example of an ice dance test below. It is the first dance a skater will usually test called the Dutch Waltz.
- Synchronized Skating- "Synchro" is when a group of skaters perform elements as a team and must be in line with the rest of the group. There are elements such as circles, blocks, intersections, and pinwheels that a team of skaters can learn to do. Synchro is growing very rapidly in competitive Figure Skating!
- Pairs Skating- Pairs skating is an option for a boy/girl team that performs lifts, spins, throws, and jumps together. It is uncommon to find as there are few male partners. I am fortunate enough to have trained a pair team. See a video of them below!
Artistry in Motion- "AIM" is an opportunity for skaters to connect music, choreography, and dance into skating. It is how a skater expresses movement through music. Skaters will learn presentation, choreography, and how to skate to different styles of music.
