Competing
There are opportunities for skaters of any level, yes even Snowplow Sam, to compete at Basic Skills Competitions. They are held all over the state at different times of the year. They offer opportunities for skaters to compete in an environment that is meant for keeping skaters interested and not afraid of competing. They are very low cost and can be done with very little private coach preparation at the lower levels.

Testing
Basic skills parents typically are unaware of testing beyond Basic Skills. Once a skater has moved into Advanced Skating and wants to continue in the sport, they can choose to test. Testing is necessary if skaters want to be coaches as well as continue in the sport seriously. A skater can test in different disciplines of skating such as Freestyle, Moves in the Field, Dance, Pairs, and Ice Dancing. The three main areas are Freestyle, Moves in the Field, and Dance. It is difficult to describe testing on paper and makes more sense once a skater or parent experiences it. Here is a link to the USFS page regarding testing. I have also attached their chart of the level progression.
